Accountability redefined

In our Accountability class at ICA this morning, we talked about the negative feel that the word accountability has to it and how it can make a client feel like we, as their coach, will just be nagging them about what they did or didn’t do between sessions.  Since it is an essential part of achieving one’s goals, our instructor gave us a new definition for it that has a much more positive tone to it.

Accountability:  A personal choice to rise above ones circumstances and demonstrate the ownership necessary for achieving desired results.  To see it, to own it, to solve it and to do it.

This definition is much more self-directed and perfectly aligned with the philosophies of coaching.  I will be sharing it with each and every client who chooses to hire me as their coach!

A minor setback

I had mentioned posting my coaching model in my previous blog and through attending a class, I realized I had actually put down in writing my coaching process vs the model.  The model being the flow of each session with a client and the process being the flow of a set of sessions.  ‘Tis a minor setback though.  The good news is that I have put some clear thought into the overall interaction with a client and now I just need to do some tweaking with the model.  Should be a piece of cake!

I have completed my Discovery Session questions and my peer coach has challenged me to send out an email to whomever I choose and invite them to contact me about having a Discovery Session.  The deadline is next Monday, May 19th.  So I must get that message drafted to allow for time to ponder the wording.

Even if it doesn’t lead to immediate clients, any practice I can get with holding the sessions will be beneficial.  I do need to have at least 2 outside clients as part of my graduation clients with ICA so I may as well get the ball rolling!  I think it will be easier to begin and build my confidence with folks who are not a part of the ICA training program.  I won’t be thinking about what this fellow coach is thinking about my first ever coaching!

It is time to jump in!  Wish me luck!

Just back from a family vacation and feel just great!!  While staying in the mountain cabin in California, I had all sorts of coaching practice ideas.  Some of them complete thoughts and some of them just beginning points, either way it was an inspirational trip!

I was able to get my elevator speech formulated to tell others, in a nutshell, what my coaching practice is all about …. “I help people find the imbalance in their lives and get it back to balanced more quickly.”

I have some basics down for my coaching model, a requirement for graduation with ICA, and will be sharing that next.

Until next time … Keep it simple!
